Both lanes of The Esplanade have been re-opened to all traffic after the final layer of asphalt was laid.
The contractor will continue to undertake electrical works as part of the project and line marking will be done under traffic management.
Electrical works are expected to be installed at the Daly Street roundabout later this week and one lane will remain open to traffic during these works.
City of Darwin would like to thank you for your patience and understanding in the execution of this important project.
TCD - Stage 4
City of Darwin has secured Roads to Recovery funding of approximately $3 million from the Australian Government to reconstruct the road. The Esplanade upgrade, between Daly Street and Herbert Street, will include:
- planting trees to provide more shade
- the use of energy efficient LED technology for street lighting
- additional pedestrian connectivity to and from Bicentennial Park
- a new on-road cycle lane (hotels side of the road)
The project involves removing and replacing the road to a depth of up to 60cm. There is no ideal time to reconstruct a major city centre road; contractors will need to start during the Dry Season to finish works before the heavy rains begin.

Tree planting works underway
27 Allosyncarpia Ternata trees have been planted between Daly Street and Herbert Street. The location for the new trees was agreed with residents and businesses during the initial consultation for The Esplanade Upgrade.
City of Darwin, in partnership with Michels Warren Munday, will work with residents and businesses to reduce the impact of the works.
