Cyclone Watch upgraded to Cyclone Warning by the Bureau of Meteorology

Media Release: Saturday 4 March 2017 17:30

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has upgraded the Darwin region to a Cyclone Warning.

The updated advice from BOM suggests a Tropical Cyclone is expected to cause gale force winds in the Darwin region within the next 24 hours.

City of Darwin is urging residents to prepare themselves and their home and to think about what action they may need to take if the threat increases.

At this stage Shoal Bay Waste Management Facility will continue to operate regular hours, closing at 6pm tonight. If time does not permit residents to take last minute items to landfill, we urge that all items in yards are securely tied down. Loose items in the event of a cyclone will cause injury and damage.

All public libraries have closed as per normal Saturday operating hours and will continue regular trade at this stage.

The community is reminded that City of Darwin Libraries and multi-storey car parks are not a cyclone shelter and to please familiarise themselves with their closest shelter. Please visit SecureNT for further information regarding shelters.

Pet owners are being urged to keep their pets safe, ensure they have a cyclone kit prepared for their pets. The Pound is currently closed and could remain closed if the threat increases.

For storm related emergencies please call the NT Emergency Services storm assistance line on 132 500. For other emergencies call 000.

City of Darwin is continuing to monitor the situation and further advice will be issued as required.
