Footpaths

City of Darwin maintains more than 350 km of footpaths within the municipality. Each year, it sets priorities for footpath reconstruction work and installation of new footpaths. The Council footpath policy explains the decision making process and how residents are advised of works.

Footpaths in residential areas are generally constructed on one side of the road only. People living on the opposite side are able to remove their old footpath and take advantage of Council's Nature Strip Program to upgrade their verge. Notification to Council is required to ensure that footpath works are not scheduled for the road in the near future.Landowners may also seek to upgrade their driveway at the same time by contributing towards the cost, depending on the driveway condition at the time.
