Car Parks and Parking Zones

Changes to Parking Zones from 1 July 2016

City of Darwin is rolling out a number of parking zone and taxi rank changes in the CBD to improve parking in the city centre, taking effect from 01 July 2016.

The rezoning of some parking bays in the CBD reflects the changing purpose of buildings and supports commercial and retail activity through encouraging parking turnover in the city centre.

A detailed plan outlining the parking bay changes is available for download.

All parking throughout the Darwin Central Business District is controlled by parking meters. The cost ranges between $1.30 and $2.50 per hour depending on where you park. The higher rates are charged in the zones closest to the main shopping and business precinct.

To use this system, park your vehicle, decide how long you expect to stay and pay at the nearest meter. You will receive a parking ticket clearly indicating when your parking time is up. Place the ticket on your vehicle's dashboard, face up, so it is clearly visible to Council Rangers.

For any parking meter faults please phone Council on the freecall number 1300 661 322. You must then use the nearest available pay and display machine.

Please note: Parking meters do not give change and do not accept 5 cent pieces. Maximum coins accepted is 25.

The City of Darwin has introduced a credit card and Visa payWave or Mastercard PAYPASS™ option for payment at these off street locations:

  • Chinatown Carpark
  • Westlane Carpark
  • Darwin Oval Carpark
  • Mclachlan Street
  • Nichols Place
  • Cavenagh Street

Credit card or PAYPASS™/ PayWave can now also be used at many of the parking meters in Zone C and 8 parking meters in Zone A on Cavenagh street.

The new electronic payment system makes it more convenient to pay for parking. There is no additional fee payable when using a credit card or PAYPASS™/ PayWave.

Instructions are displayed on the meters along with appropriate signage at all car parks where the electronic payment system is available. If at any time the credit card payment option is not available, you must still purchase a ticket by another method i.e. coins.

Off-Street Parking

No new reserved parking permits will be issued for off-street car parks in the CBD.

City of Darwin provides eleven off-street city car parks which are well marked with the familiar international parking emblem. Each has a number of parking bays designated for use by disabled people and some have motorcycle parking available.

Parking in a designated disabled bay in all off-street open air, surfaced lot,car parks is free all day except when parking in a disabled bay in West Lane car park or China Town car park.  If parking in a disabled bay in West Lane or China Town car park you may stay for twice the time paid for, however parking fees apply.
