Friendship cities typically emerge to respond to short-term needs and to support programs led by other groups in the community.
Each year Council receives numerous requests from cities all over the world, seeking the establishment of a sister city or friendship. The following friendships are being explored:
Darwin has a longstanding friendship with foundations in a shared military history. Formalisation of this friendship is yet to occur.
Following a visit by Darwin's Lord Mayor in early 2010, Council signed a Friendship City agreement with the Municipality of Santa Cruz on account of the numerous shared characteristics between the two cities.
