In its Evolving Darwin – Strategic Directions Beyond 2020 and beyond, City of Darwin has identified the following strategy under the Outcome: 4.1 Be a leader with climate change policies:
- 4.1.1 Develop and implement a climate change policy and strategies for the reduction of carbon emissions
City of Darwin established a Climate Change and Environment Section in 2009. The unit consists of the Manager, Senior Climate Change and Environment Officer and Secretary. Council has developed a Climate Change Action Plan 2011-2020 which outlines framework in which council will act to minimise their contribution to Climate Change. The action plan outlines how Council will meet the policy through a series of mitigation and adaptation initiatives.
City of Darwin is a member of the Cities for Climate Change Protection (CCP) Program. Council was awarded Milestone Four in the CCP Program in June 2009.
